Classes & Events 2014

The following events and classes are being offered by, or are of interest to the members of, the Wilson County Master Gardener Association. Some are open to the public and some are for Master Gardeners and interns only. 30 April – Free Rain Garden Workshop

Creating and maintaining a home rain garden at 9:00 AM in the Panattoni Room of the Mount Juliet Community Center at Charlie Daniels Park in Mount Juliet, TN. Workshop will provide a comprehensive overview and hands-on training for rain garden design, installation and maintenance. Come dressed in work clothes!! Advanced registration is required!! 3 May – Elsie Quarterman Cedar Glade Festival at Cedars of Lebanon State Park

The Elsie Quarterman Cedar Glade Festival will be May 3 at Cedars of Lebanon State Park. Includes flower walks, bird walks, lectures and other events Details to follow.

12 July – Vanderbilt Arboretum Tree Tour

at 9:00 AM on Vanderbilt Campus, Nashville, TN. Join Dr. Steve Baskauf for a guided tour of the Vanderbilt Arboretum. This is sure to be an entertaining and informative visit to the trees of Vanderbilt! The tour will last about an hour, and we’ll meet at the Welesley Place Parking Garage, 2043 Scarritt Place, Nashville, TN 37203, by this door. If you’re interested in carpooling, please email vp@wilsoncountymg.org and indicate whether you’d prefer to meet up in Mt. Juliet or in Lebanon. You don’t have to be a Master Gardener to join us!.

19 July – Tree Identification Class (FREE & open to public)

5 August – WCMG Member meeting / Walking Tour of WCMG Projects in Fiddlers Grove

at 6:30 PM at the Opry Stage in Fiddlers Grove, James E. Ward Ag. Center, 945 East Baddour Parkway, Lebanon TN 37087. Fill up at the picnic, then come for a leisurely stroll around Fiddler’s Grove to see what your fellow Master Gardeners have been up to and how things are shaping up for the fair. We’ll start at the new Master Gardener’s building/demo garden and will continue on around the loop, ending up again at the Fiddlers Grove Opry pavilion. Project leaders will be on hand to talk about their projects and identify plants. This tour is rain-proof: In case of rain, it will morph into a slideshow!

2 September – WCMG Member meeting / Borer and Fire Ant Management

at 6:30 PM in the Education Building, James E. Ward Ag. Center, 945 East Baddour Parkway, Lebanon TN 37087. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Jason Oliver discussing Borer and Fire Ant Management in Landscapes.

Dr. Oliver is an Associate Professor of Entomology and the entomology program lead at TSU’s Floyd Nursery Research Center in McMinnville. He is an authority on fire ants and wood-boring beetles, and conducts research in the areas of integrated pest management, biological control, and semiochemicals/trap development.
